Kansas City partner Steve Coronado and senior counsel Dan Young obtained summary judgment for a local municipality in a lawsuit that alleged defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress against the municipality and two elected officials. The plaintiff claimed statements made by the elected officials to the press were defamatory and that the municipality was responsible for the actions of the elected officials. Summary judgment was sought for the municipality based on the application of sovereign immunity. The court sustained the motion filed for the municipality and granted summary judgment. A motion to dismiss the claims asserted against the elected officials remains pending.
