Yara K. Duran

Yara is a dual-qualified professional holding both a registered nurse (RN) license and a Juris Doctor degree. She brings this unique combination of clinical and legal experience to Baty Otto Scheer’s Kansas City office.

Prior to entering the legal profession, Yara spent two decades working as a nurse, health care administrator, and clinical research professional. This background provides her with a practical understanding of clinical decision-making, medical documentation, and health care regulatory frameworks—valuable insight that informs her approach to the analysis of complex personal injury, health care, and liability cases. Yara is bilingual with fluency in English and Spanish and has also worked as a medical interpreter.  

Yara graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 2025. During law school, she served as a risk and legal intern at one of Kansas City’s area hospitals where she conducted legal research on federal and state health care regulations, assisted with hospital risk assessments, and contributed to policy revisions addressing regulatory compliance and patient safety.
